Hey, hey, my lovely bookworms!

Grab your favorite steamy beverage and cozy up, because today we're taking a look at anti-heroes in romance novels. You know, those swoon-worthy characters who don’t always see the line between good and bad… and downright naughty!

You’re probably thinking: "Kimberly, aren't anti-heroes just bad boys with a fancy name?" Ah, dear readers, they're so much more than that! Anti-heroes bring that blend of danger, intrigue, and irresistible charm that keeps our hearts racing and the books or e-readers in our hands.

Dark Romance: Dark romance is all about pushing boundaries and exploring the forbidden… Enter a brooding, enigmatic man with a past darker than the night itself. You know, the kind of man who makes your heart race while you question your morals. Anti-heroes in dark romance ooze danger and secrets, making you question whether you should root for them or give them a spank—uh… you know what I mean.😏

Dark romance anti-heroes are usually the kind of guys who are out for vengeance and will kill anyone who touches the heroine, even if he won’t admit he likes her. Only he gets to look at her that way, and he’d burn the world to keep her safe... and his.

Sure, there’s usually violence and ambiguous choices involved, but remember, it’s fiction and safe. No one was harmed in the making of these stories! (Except maybe the sleep-deprived, caffeine-riddled author.🙃)

Sweet Romance: What?! There’re anti-heroes in sweet romance? Oh, you bet! Remember Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice? Or Joshua from The Hating Game? Or my favorite Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre?😍 In this subgenre, our anti-hero may or may not have a dark past, but they definitely have quirks and rough edges, but underneath it all, there’s a big, soft heart. Though, it’s possible they’d still let the world blow up to save their love.

Historical Romance: In historical romance, there’s usually a dashing rogue with a twinkle in his eye to sweep the inexperienced but feisty heroine off her feet. These anti-heroes are typically bored, rich aristocrats who gamble, brawl, and drink too much while bedding anyone who will let him. They may not have aced their etiquette classes, but they sure know how to steal a heart with a smoldering glance across a ballroom. Here, you’ll have a man who’s been hurt by his parents or close friend or even a woman. He’s acting out by being a rogue who pretends he doesn’t care about anything… until he meets her.

Paranormal Romance: In the paranormal realm, we might find ourselves entangled with mysterious creatures like vampires, shifters, or even mischievous demons. These anti-heroes come with their own set of challenges – like figuring out how to blend into human society without accidentally biting someone's neck. They’re not all that different from the anti-heroes in the other subgenres, except they have supernatural powers and are usually immortal. Vampire, shifter, demon… they’re still enticing and make us devour their stories as fast as we can!

When it comes down to it, anti-heroes are the men we hate to love and love to hate. They’re sexy and grumpy and intriguing. Do we necessarily want a possessive man who growls and threatens anyone who means you harm? Yes… oops! I meant NO! But go ahead, embrace the literary anti-hero in all their flawed glory!

Happy reading, my friends!

Kimberly Quay

Kimberly Quay has loved romance & fantasy as far back as she can remember. Her childhood home was full of fantasy, romance, and thriller books and movies. Born and raised in Florida, she spent most of her youth outside searching for fairies and hoping to meet (and fall in love with) a vampire.

Author of (spicy) contemporary romance, (steamy) paranormal shifter romance, and (thrilling) urban fantasy, she’s a sucker for a good rom-com and she’s fascinated by old graveyards. When she’s not working on her next novel, she’s reading or kicking her husband’s butt in darts.

Kimberly still loves reading. Especially Nora Roberts and Kim Harrison.
