Hello, lovely readers,

Today, we delve into the mystery genre. So grab your magnifying glasses, dust off your deerstalkers (a.k.a. a Sherlock Holmes hat), and prepare to embark on a whimsical journey of clues, red herrings, and quirky characters!

Mysteries, those puzzling stories that tickle our brains and leave us breathless with anticipation. It's a genre that has enthralled readers for ages, keeping us on the edge of our seats and luring us into a labyrinth of secrets. From cozy whodunits to spine-chilling thrillers, the mystery genre offers something for every curious soul.

Let's start with the classic whodunits, the bread and butter of the genre. Imagine a dimly lit drawing room, an eclectic group of characters, and a devious crime (usually a murder) committed right under their noses. It's a social gathering gone horribly wrong, where the task of uncovering the truth falls on the shoulders of a wise detective, armed with nothing but wit, deductive reasoning, and perhaps a secret stash of biscuits. Yes, I'm looking at you, dear Sherlock Holmes and your brilliant mind!

  •   Book recs: Obviously, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but also Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

Next up: historical mysteries, where cunning investigators unmask hidden secrets against the backdrop of times long past. It's like stepping into a time machine with a detective's notebook as our guide, unlocking the secrets of centuries gone by.

  •   Book rec: The Alienist by Caleb Carr

For those who yearn for a touch of danger, brace yourselves for heart-pounding mystery thrillers. In these stories, the stakes are higher, the chase is relentless, and the lines between right and wrong blur. International conspiracies, rogue spies, and nail-biting suspense will keep you turning the pages!

  •   Book recs: There are so many I could recommend here, but here are my favorites: The entire Jason Bourne series by Robert Ludlum (I fell for Jason Bourne way before Matt Damon took the role!) The Hannibal Lecter series by Thomas Harris, but specifically Silence of the Lambs (The movie was excellent, but the book was even better!) I will say the 3rd book Hannibal gave me nightmares for weeks! And a few more just because I love them The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (Do all mystery thrillers become movies?)

Not up for darkness and danger? How about some cozy mysteries instead? These stories bring us to quaint villages with charming characters. These mysteries are like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day, where our amateur sleuths solve crimes amidst baking contests, knitting circles, and the occasional mischievous cat. Just make sure you don't spill tea on the evidence!

  •   Book recs: The Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris (She doesn’t just write about sexy vampires!)

And let's not forget about paranormal mysteries, where supernatural elements and intricate puzzles join forces to entertain us. Ghostly apparitions, mythical creatures, and unexplainable phenomena blend with detective work, creating a story that keeps us wondering.

  •   Book recs: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

So, my dear readers, as you embark on your mystery-filled adventures, remember that the genre's landscape is as vast and varied as the cast of characters. From locked rooms to haunted castles, from cozy villages to shadowy alleyways, mysteries offer a refuge for the curious souls among us.

Now, go forth and immerse yourselves in the mystery genre! Who knows what you might uncover in the depths of those tantalizing pages?

Happy sleuthing!

Kimberly Quay

Kimberly Quay has loved romance & fantasy as far back as she can remember. Her childhood home was full of fantasy, romance, and thriller books and movies. Born and raised in Florida, she spent most of her youth outside searching for fairies and hoping to meet (and fall in love with) a vampire.

Author of (spicy) contemporary romance, (steamy) paranormal shifter romance, and (thrilling) urban fantasy, she’s a sucker for a good rom-com and she’s fascinated by old graveyards. When she’s not working on her next novel, she’s reading or kicking her husband’s butt in darts.

Kimberly still loves reading. Especially Nora Roberts and Kim Harrison.
