My Writing Process… Design and Formatting.

Hello! I get a lot of questions about writing and how I do it, so I thought I'd share my process. Step into my imaginary world where deadlines don't exist, typos are compliments, and caffeine is the only necessary writing tool!

Design and Formatting: Now that the meat of the book is in tip-top shape, it's time to make it look pretty, because no matter what anyone says, we all judge a book by its cover!

BUT… it’s not only the cover! The pages get a bit of sprucing up as well!

Cover design is like trying to solve a Rubik's cube while blindfolded, with one hand tied behind your back while standing on one leg. Which is why I won’t even try it on my own!

My cover designer and I do a Zoom call for every cover (which not many designers do!) She shares her screen with me and seeing the time it takes her to make even the smallest change was eye-opening!

Picking a title (which is one of the most important steps!) and knowing the basics of what I want on the cover is something I do early on, often before I’ve written the first draft, because designers book up quickly. So, booking my designer, unlike actually writing the book, is one thing I can’t procrastinate on!

Formatting the inside is where I shine like a star (or at least a piece of paper cut into a star and covered in glitter)! I've tried every tool under the sun, but Kindle Create turned out to be my favorite. Don't believe the rumors, it's user-friendly and packed with options. Yes, it's a bit time-consuming, but I secretly love it.

Next week is all about Beta Readers! But until then, Happy Reading!

Kimberly Quay

Kimberly Quay has loved romance & fantasy as far back as she can remember. Her childhood home was full of fantasy, romance, and thriller books and movies. Born and raised in Florida, she spent most of her youth outside searching for fairies and hoping to meet (and fall in love with) a vampire.

Author of (spicy) contemporary romance, (steamy) paranormal shifter romance, and (thrilling) urban fantasy, she’s a sucker for a good rom-com and she’s fascinated by old graveyards. When she’s not working on her next novel, she’s reading or kicking her husband’s butt in darts.

Kimberly still loves reading. Especially Nora Roberts and Kim Harrison.
